Monash City Council Mayor Stefanie Perri has announced her resignation, effective 9am Wednesday April 28.
Ms Perri made the announcement at a public Council meeting on Tuesday April 27. The resignation is due to Ms Perri’s candidacy for Labour for the Federal seat of Chisholm in the upcoming election.
In her announcement, Ms Perri commended her colleagues and reflected on her time with the Monash Council.

“It has been a pleasure to serve [this community],” said Ms Perri.

Monash Council will elect a new Mayor on Wednesday May 8 at 6:30pm at a specially-organised council meeting, to be held at the Monash Civic Centre. This election will be open to the public.

Fellow Councillor Theo Zographos has said the Council was prepared for this announcement.

“[Ms Perri] was pre-selected in January [as candidate for the Federal seat],” said Cr Zographos. There was a “good expectation that she would resign.”

The vacancy for the seat of Chisholm was made when current MP Anna Burke announced her resignation from the position in December last year. Ms Burke has held the position for 18 years, and worked closely with Ms Perri for the last five of those.

Cr Zographos has said there are “measures in place” to prevent much disruption to the Council in the interim.
This resignation is being seen by some as an opportunity to restore order to a council demonstrating a recent decline in behaviour and efficiency.

One local resident of this opinion is Mr Noah McMahon.

“It became blatantly obvious that [Perri] would willingly put political affiliations before her constituents,” said McMahon. He is not disappointed to see Ms Perri leave. “Good riddance!”

Fellow Councillor Geoff Lake does not share this view.

“Stefanie Perri was a hardworking and extremely capable councillor who showed great leadership…during her six years as a Monash Councillor.”

A general Local Government election will be held in October later this year.
